The Department of Computing, Faculty of Technology at the University of Turku is looking for a (fixed term position) postdoctoral researcher or doctoral researcher/project researcher, or secondarily, research assistant in the area of machine learning for health data analytics.

The work is full-time and will start according to mutual agreement as soon as possible. The position is fixed term ending on December 31st, 2026.

The position is in the “Machine learning for secure multi-hospital data integration” project funded by Research Council of Finland. In the project, we develop multi-modal machine learning approaches to integrating diverse data sources such as data from electronic health records, imaging data and biosignals in order to enable more reliable prediction models especially in the area of cardiovascular diseases. A central focus of the project is in combining data from multiple sources such as hospitals. This leads to unique challenges both regards to privacy (requiring federated learning and privacy guarantees for the models) as well as ensuring that the prediction models generalize well across different hospital rather than overfitting to specific properties of a single source only. As a member of our team you will join the innovative Digital Health Technology research group at the University of Turku (see https://healthtech.utu.fi/ ).

What we offer:

  • A high-quality research environment, where experienced supervisors and colleagues working on multiple research projects in the area of machine learning and health can support your growth as a researcher
  • Opportunity to develop state-of-the-art machine learning based solutions that can have real impact on the field of health data analytics
  • The prospects to build an international research career within our collaboration network, with opportunities for research visits provided.
  • A working culture, where team members are treated as equals and open discussion is encouraged.
  • Opportunities to pursue your own ideas and participate in other interesting side projects.

Who we are looking for

What we expect from applicants:

  • Genuine interest in developing innovative solutions for machine learning based health data analytics, high motivation and willingness to learn
  • A degree in a computationally oriented field, such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, biomedical engineering, or health technology.
  • Proficiency in machine learning based data analytics. Applicants should be able to implement data analytics processes and algorithms in scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, R). Prior experience with deep learning is an advantage.
  • The ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary research group.
  • Independent work, collaboration skills, interpersonal skills, and analytical abilities.
  • Sufficient proficiency in the English language.
