The Department of Applied Linguistics, Translation and Interpreting Studies in the Faculty of Arts has the following part-time (80 %) vacancy: junior or senior professor in the field of Interpreting Studies (French-Dutch).

Position

You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education (40 %), research (40 %) and services (20 %). Your role will also include organisational and managerial aspects.

Education

  • You will provide high-quality education in interpreting studies and practice French-Dutch.
  • The teaching load may evolve in function of the course programme and internal consultation with colleagues. The total teaching load will be maximum 19 ECTS and minimum 14.5 ECTS.
  • You will teach:
    • Interpreting Studies (Master’s in interpreting: 3 ECTS)
    • Interpreting Techniques (Master’s in interpreting, partim: 1.5 out of 3 ECTS)
    • Consecutive Interpreting French-Dutch and Dutch-French (Master’s in interpreting, partim: 3 out of 6 ECTS)
    • Simultaneous Interpreting French-Dutch (Master’s in interpreting: 3 ECTS)
    • Interpreting Practice and Job Shadowing (Master’s in interpreting, partim: 1 out of 6 ECTS)
    • Dutch Communication Skills (Master’s in interpreting, partim: 1 out of 3 ECTS)
    • French: Interpreting skills (Bachelor’s in applied linguistics, 3 ECTS)
  • You will play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You will supervise students during the writing of bachelor’s and master’s papers

Research

  • You will advance high-quality scientific research in interpreting studies, preferably with a focus on the use of technology in interpreting research and practice, such as computer-assisted interpreting tools (CAI tools) in simultaneous, consecutive and dialogue interpreting, but also in remote, and this, within the French language section.
  • Your research fits the profile and vision of the Translation, interpreting and intercultural Studies (TricS) research group.
  • You will initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects. You will also participate in ongoing research programmes.
  • You will acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You will publish in international peer-reviewed journals and write, edit or contribute to books published by leading scientific publishers.
  • You will develop an international scientific network.
  • You will supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Services

  • You will play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You will participate in student recruitment, boards and committees, and popular communication to a non-academic audience.

Organisation and leadership

  • You will accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of education, research and/or services and you will contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style will be motivating and coaching. You will be attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in interpreting studies, or in translation studies, linguistics or literature with a clear focus on interpreting, and with French and Dutch as subject languages.
  • You hold a master’s degree in interpreting with French and Dutch as subject languages. A master's or postgraduate degree (EMCI) in simultaneous interpreting is an important asset.
  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You have established an excellent international research portfolio with academic peer-reviewed publications.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities available.
  • Proven experience in interpreting (research and academic teaching) is an asset.
  • Proven experience in teaching French-Dutch interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous) at an academic level is an asset.
  • A network of professional partners in the public and private sectors is an asset.
  • An international network in the interpretation field is an asset.
  • You are a native speaker of Dutch (C2) and have a perfect command of this language, both orally and in writing.
  • You have an excellent (near native, C2) command of French.
  • You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You commit yourself to turning your work environment into an inclusive place in which diversity is valued and all students, including those with special vulnerabilities, feel safe.

What we offer

  • We offer a part-time, structural appointment as a member of the Senior Academic Staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP). The level of your appointment (assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor) is determined on the basis of your professional experience and academic qualifications. Junior ZAP members are usually offered temporary appointment as a tenure track assistant professor for five years, which is then followed by permanent appointment (tenure) as an associate professor. Appointment as an associate professor or higher leads to permanent appointment (tenure) after a maximum of three years. A favourable performance appraisal is always required for permanent appointment.
  • We offer, after a positive evaluation of a PhD project application you submit, an attractive starter package consisting of a four-year PhD project and €15,000 of consumables to boost your research from the start of your employment at the University of Antwerp.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales for Senior Academic Staff (ZAP) and calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
  • You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned starting date is 15 September 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
