Within the University, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is a highly interdisciplinary research centre (IC), integrating experimental biology and computational biology approaches in order to develop the foundation of a future predictive, preventive and personalized medicine. The LCSB provides extensive resources and research support through an array of services and research platforms, amongst which also the rodent (https://wwwen.uni.lu/lcsb/services/platforms/rodent_facility) and aquatic (https://wwwen.uni.lu/lcsb/services/platforms/aquatic_facility) platforms. These platforms provide services to research groups at the University and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:

You will join the University of Luxembourg to fulfil the role of "Laboratory Animal Veterinarian" employed in scientific procedure establishments, breeding and supplying establishments. The postholder will provide expert veterinary advice to animal carers and users on the welfare and husbandry of animals used in research in line with the National and European legislation and on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Within your role you will closely collaborate with the designated veterinarian of the University, the managers of the corresponding facilities, technicians, caretakers, researchers and related authorities including the Animal Welfare Bodies and in the Animal Experimental Ethical Committee of the University.

  Your Role...

  • Ensure comprehensive veterinary care and services are available at all times. Including to conduct diagnostic activities to confirm health or disease status and advise on the use of medications and contribute to ordering, controlling and supplying medicines and other therapeutic substances for use on protected animals in the facilities. Advise on best practice with respect to methods of anesthesia, aseptic and surgical techniques, and post-operative care
  • Ensure that the legal requirements are respected
  • Actively contribute to the husbandry program and safeguarding the welfare of animals hosted. Including regular visits at facilities, advising to license holders/applicants/others on all aspects of animal care, inspection of work performed and assurance that animal health records are maintained
  • Raise awareness and advise on the implementation of the 3R’s and choice of appropriate animal models
  • Contributes to the supervision of import/export of animals and the approval/assurance of official documents and health certificates. Contribute to the preparation of activity reports and help to ensure that research projects are appropriately monitored and comply with the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and support in the management of the regulatory files
  • Take active part in training/lecture/workshop activities relating to conduction of minor procedures or animal welfare and health e.g. Laboratory Animal Science Course for relevant internal audiences and newcomers

  What we expect from you…

  • Veterinary Degree: Have or obtain a working permit by the Collège Veterinaire, have expertise in laboratory animal medicine for rodent and zebrafish and deep knowledge of the relevant National and European legislation (e.g. Règlement grand ducal adopted in 2013 in line with the European Directive for the use of animals in scientific research)
  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field and regularly done CPDs. A strong commitment to improving animal welfare and a good understanding of the procedures involved in biomedical research and experience is backed up with relevant up-to-date knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and good team player
  • Reliable and self-reliant way of working with the capacity to be flexible
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English. Good level of French and/or German is an asset
