- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in neuroscience from the molecular to the societal level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with research groups from Karolinska Institutet (KI), other universities and with Region Stockholm.

The position is located in the Neuro Division at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. The Neuro Division has for many decades conducted broad and successful research in neurological diseases. The clinical activities includes mapping the relationship between disease development and changes in the brain structure and function and is carried out in close collaboration with the department's facilities for brain imaging. The department is responsible for the academic activities of several imaging infrastructures including the facilities for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic and electroencephalography (EEG, MEG). Applications are welcomed for a position as professor of neuroimaging where the focus will be on MEG. We offer an engaging and interdisciplinary research environment where you have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research at a top international level. More information about the Neuro Division can be found here - The Division of Neuro.

Description of the subject area

The department currently has several professors with expertise in PET and MRI methods. In order to create a more complete picture of the relationship between brain structure, function, and metabolism, it is now necessary to strengthen the competence in the MEG field. This is an important part of the wider strategic investment in imaging being made at KI, including the CIR - Center for Imaging Research, which includes the department’s brain imaging facilities. MEG's unique temporal resolution and direct link to the ongoing cellular brain activity make it an important complement to research in neurology, neurobiology, psychiatry and psychology. Currently, MEG is undergoing an important development phase, where Sweden and KI are making contributions at the international forefront.

Your mission

The candidate will mainly work with research and education in the MEG field, with a main focus on clinical and cognitive neuroscience. The work includes the development and application of experimental MEG studies in humans, both with conventional and on-scalp MEG, but also in combination with other imaging methods such as EEG, MRI, and PET. The position is focused on research, and the candidate is expected to conduct research at an internationally high level and lead a strong research group within the subject. The work involves teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

Additional eligibility requirements include documented experience of conducting research in the field of MEG at an internationally high level, as well as having received research grants in competition within this research field. The applicant must have experience in conducting MEG studies, with both conventional and on-scalp MEG, and in having used the method in neurological diseases as well as in cognitive neuroscience. Very good skills in spoken and written English is also required.

Assessment criteria

The position is focused on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (3).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious if the applicant has experience with combining MEG with other imaging modalities such as EEG, MRI, and PET. The candidate is expected to collaborate with the many facilities for different imaging modalities within CIR, and therefore experience in leading and developing operations within brain imaging facilities is highly meritorious. It is also highly meritorious if the applicant has demonstrated multidisciplinary collaboration with both engineers and clinicians, as well as having a well-established national and international involvement in the field. Documented experience with diverse teaching methods at basic, advanced and postgraduate level as well as experience in individual supervision of degree theses, doctoral students and postdocs is also a merit.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI in general, and the Neuro Division in particular.
